Can we connect Slow Fashion with our Indigenous Knowledge?

In this Masterclass, Dr Erica de Greef will explore the need (and potential) to decolonise the Slow Fashion movement. We will consider the power of cultural knowledge in the understanding of Slow Fashion, and propose ways in which to rethink and reframe fashion in a post-COVID era.

Dr Erica De Greef.

Erica de Greef is co-founder of the African Fashion Research Institute (AFRI) and the Curator at Large in Fashion at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCAA) in Cape Town. She holds a PhD in African Studies from the University of Cape Town. Erica is an independent fashion curator, writer and lecturer whose work has contributed to tertiary fashion education and the local fashion industry in many ways.

Ditiro Mashigo 

Serati. Ltd

Ditiro believes in the power of socially conscious design as a tool for transformation and healing, she hopes that her work will drive a call for a more sustainable design approach in the fashion and textile design industries. Ditiro is a Pretoria based textile and fashion designer. She studied Fashion design (2014) followed by Textile design and technology (2016) at The Tshwane University of Technology. Initially inspired by a desire to reimagine the narrative of the traditional Pedi woman she established Serati Ltd, between 2014-2020 she designs high craft clothing & textile surfaces, while exploring slow fashion practices such as upcycling, using eco friendly dye processes & sourcing locally.

Rudo Nondo 

Fashion Revolution (Zimbabwe)

Rudo Nondo is a fashion and product designer based in Zimbabwe and she is currently the Country Coordinator for Fashion Revolution Zimbabwe. Rudo has worked with both urban and rural communities in Zimbabwe and Swaziland and particularly with the women in these communities. Her interests lie in artisan community development through artisan led design and creatively empowering women through storytelling and craft.

Lukhanyo Mdingi

Born in East Coast of South Africa, Cape Town-based Fashion Designer, Lukhanyo Mdingi graduated from one of South Africa’s leading design universities, Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2015. The following year Lukhanyo together with select African designers had the opportunity to showcase at the Pitti Uomo Immagine A/W 17 Collection in Florence. Having been a participant in the British Fashion Council's international Fashion Showcase, Lukhanyo has continued to use the spirit of considered & well thought-out designs in order to intimately work hand in hand with artisans to seamlessly enhance each creations fullest potential.
